What Can You Do to Determine Your Readiness For Adoption?

Do you want to have kids? Adoption is an option you may not have considered. When you adopt a child, the child doesn't carry your genes, but you care for it as if it were your family. Once the adoption process is finished, the child is, in the eyes of the law, yours. Different states have different waiting periods or complexities in the adoption process, but once you're finished, you've added someone to your family, which is a momentous occasion indeed. In the event that you are finding yourself unable to have children, it might do you well to consider adoption, if you're ready for it. It's a difficult process to adopt, but you can get advice or appraisals of the situation from family members or people you trust. Due to the permanence and responsibility involved with such a thing, you don't want to make the decision lightly. Those of you who want to be a single parent should get the advice of people who know what it's like, in order to determine your suitability for adoption.

Keep in mind that the child won't be your blood relative, but you do have to care for it and love it as if it were. Look deep within yourself and determine whether or not you can live with the fact that you are taking care of someone else's child. If this suits you without a problem, then adoption could work for you. Adoption is perfect for those people who just want to take care of a child and give them a place to be loved, regardless of blood relation. Make sure you realize the monetary and time commitment involved in having children. Just adopting the child could cost you a lot of money and time.

You might not know a whole lot about the child you are about to adopt. The adoption agency can fill you in on their family history so you can learn more, and you'll know what circumstances led to his or her adoption, giving you a better idea of how to act around the child. The reason for his adoption will become clear. In some cases, you might not be able to find out some things about their parents; it's up to you to discover whether or not you're okay with that. If the past of the child doesn't matter as much as their future with you, adoption is perfect for you.

Why You Should Consider Adoption

Are celebrities who adopt children starting a trend? In recent years Angelina Jolie and her partner Brad Pitt have adopted sons Maddox and Pax Thien and daughter Zahara. All three have been adopted from different countries.

Madonna adopted her son David from Malawi and actress Meg Ryan provided a home to a little girl named Daisy whom she adopted from China. Do the decisions that these celebrities make influence people who are also considering adoption?

Mo O'Reilly from the British Association for Adoption & Fostering said she is undecided. "It's difficult to tell. I think if it does have an impact, is it likely to make them think about adopting from abroad rather than adopting at home, which is a shame".

She added: "I think there's quite a lot of controversy about people generally adopting from abroad and we know there's a place for that but I think I would try and encourage people to think about children in their own country first.

In any one year there are upwards of four to five thousand children needing adoption in the United Kingdom every year and we have to try and recruit new adopters who can meet that need. Sometimes we fall short on that and those children aren't able to be adopted. Which is a real shame.

I would encourage people interested in adoption to try and apply to their local council or government first. Plus, remember adoption is a legal procedure which involves going to court. Parental responsibility is transferred from the birth parents to the new adoptive parents so in every way that child becomes the legal child of this new family".

In England alone she told us that there are not enough people coming forward to adopt young children. Many prospective parents would like to adopt newborn babies but is this an unrealistic goal? Mo said, "On the whole it's pretty unlikely but there are some categories of people where they could have a realistic chance. If they are people coming from the black and minority ethnic communities there are a good number of children who either have had two black parents or who are dual heritage and require adoptive families.

The assessment process is thorough and can last for six to eight months. At the end of the process people should have a good idea about what age of child they would be most suited to and interested in. However, it's worth mentioning that the majority of children placed for adoption are still under the age of five. They are very young children and absolutely delightful and they're in care for absolutely no fault of their own and are desperate to have a permanent family. By the time most people come to think about adoption they have either failed to conceive through fertility treatment so this may be the only route available to them".

Mo also said, "social workers also know how difficult the adoption process can be but they are there to help you. Honestly, social workers are human beings they understand that people aren't perfect, we're looking for ordinary, honest folk who have a real interest in children and who want to give their best efforts."

Adoption Grant

The greatest expectation of two people coming together as husbands and wife is to have there own children, but some of them end up finding out that they are not able to have their own children. Couple feel so bad and disappointed when what they have planned for life could not work out the way they planned it. What this couple should remember is that it is not the end of the road. There is still an option out there available for them. They could always consider adoption as their next alternative.

Thousands and thousands of children out there needs lasting and loving arms of parents to hold and care for them and you could be exactly the type of person that can give them that love they require. With adoption available grant, one should not worry about the cost of being able to adopt that child of his dream, for there is hope for all that really wants to adopt. What the prospective adoptive parents needs to do, is to research well.A good search on the internet can be of great help to the couples, inquiring at adoption home or asking people about the adoption grant that may be available to them could also help them know more about adoption as well as providing the opportunity they never thought to be possible.

So many people hoping to adopt do not know about these helps they could get when they want to adopt. Prospective adoptive parents are therefore ask to go out there and find out for themselves the things that are available for them as a help during adoption. Some programmes have fund available to couples. This financial aids provide help to those people who have gone though adoption process, as this will help make their dreams come true.

Adoption organisation makes these funds available to the adoptive parents who are able to prove to them beyond reasonable doubt that they are able to take care of a child but lacks finances. The fund is then made available to these couples to enable them accomplish there task.

It is important that the adoptive parents understands all the terms and conditions of getting the adoption grant through, so that they do not end up being disappointed in the end. There are criteria for these grants. Couples are therefore expected to meet them in other to get these grants. They also should know that peradventure the grant is being approved for them, it may not be enough for their adoption expenses. They will make sure they are saving up money to help incase the approved grant could not take up the expenses.

When Dog Adoption Goes Awry

Katrina dog awaits court decision to learn his fate

During the Katrina evacuation, a woman was compelled to leave her best friend, a small dog she received as a puppy for Christmas in 2004, behind. Her last glimpse of her dog was from the helicopter she was being whisked away on. She had just a fleeting second to snap a photo of her dog, a photo that would hold her memories during the difficult months to follow.

As chance would have it, the wonderful work of the Best Friends dog and cat evacuation team, spotted this little Katrina pup and rescued this dog along with approximately 6000 others.

The seemingly lucky dog was fostered to an Arizona family in early 2006, until his rightful guardian could be found, by The Animal Benefit Club, in violation of its agreement with Best Friends. When the Katrina dog "mom" learned of her dog's whereabouts she was delighted and a heartwarming reunion was envisioned.

Not so fast....The foster family decided that they wanted to keep the dog. They claimed the pup was best left with them. The Katrina evacuee couldn't possibly take care of him as good as they, or so they claimed.

Now the issue has gone to court and trial is underway, if there has been no delay.

So who will get the beloved dog lost in the Katrina shuffle, then rescued by Best Friends, fostered in Arizona, and now the subject of litigation?

Well......the foster family has offered to give the dog back. Initially, this sounds great until you read the fine print. They are demanding $10,000 in order to do so.

Dogs 4Life applauds Best Friends for footing the legal bills in an attempt to get this poor dog back to his proper home.

The family that now has the dog claims it's a case of mistaken identity and the dog they have is not the same Katrina displaced pup. On the other hand there is documentary evidence, including a dog tag and receipt as well as photographs of the dog which confirm the pooch's true identity.

So what does the family want? The dog? The money? Whatever the resolution by the court, and we are pulling for the Katrina lady and her hopeful reunion with her dog, this is truly a case when a dog "adoption" has gone awry.

This case may well set a precedent for similar cases in the future so keep an eye out for updates on the tale of the Katrina evacuee and her dog.

Military Adoption

Military families often find it difficult to adopt a child. The most fundamental reason for this is relocation due to which many adoption agencies are reluctant to even start the process of adoption for families who are in service. However, things seem to be changing with changing times. Numerous relocation and dependent benefits are associated when military families adopt a child.

Organized structure and lifestyle of the family is the most important fact that adoption agencies look into during adoption. Military families are most preferred in this aspect. Another advantage available to military families is easy access to community support systems such as schools, day care centers, baby care centers, medical programs and even shopping malls.

The entire process of adoption is overlooked by the military itself. Adoption agency fees are reimbursed to any family opting for an international adoption. Other expenses and services related to adoption that are taken care by the military include hospital fees, legal charges, counseling services, immigration assistance and foster care. Parents can either opt for a deferment in their deployment or can opt for areas that are suitable to meet the physical requirements of the child and the family under the Exceptional Family Member Program. Numerous relief programs are available in the military through which adoptive parents in active service can get a loan.

Military also has provision to reimburse medical expenses incurred during the process of adoption. Apart from that, around $1,000 a month is reimbursed to families who adopt physically challenged children or children with special needs.

How Adoption Works

To apply to adopt a child you must be over 21 years of age and the child must be under 18 years. if you are applying with somebody else as a joint application you will have to be married or in a civil partnership. If you are not married only one person can adopt.

Very often the adoption will be carried out through an adoption agency. They will arrange for a social worker to visit you and make a home study assessment of your family. They will take references and check out your medical records. After this initial assessment an adoption panel will make a recommendation as to whether you would be suitable adoptive parents. If you are approved the process of matching a child to your family will begin.

Where an adoption agency is not being used the local social services department of the county council must be informed not less than three months before making the application to the court. In most cases your application to the court to adopt a child will be dealt with by a specialised adoption centre. These are courts which have specialist judges and adoption officers with special training and experience in the adoption process.

When considering your application the judge will have a number of options. Very often a reporting officer will be appointed. If the current parent or guardian of the child agrees to the adoption a report will be prepared by the reporting officer to help and assist the court. As in all matters concerning children the governing principle will be what is in the child's best interest.

Should the child's existing parent or guardian not agree to the adoption the court will appoint a guardian to protect the child's best interest. The child's guardian will make a report to the court advising on what will be in the child's best interest and will represent the child in court. In most cases the local authority or adoption agency will be asked to prepare a report for the court which will include details about both the child and your family.

About four weeks after you have lodged your application for adoption with the court a first directions hearing will be fixed. At this hearing the judge will consider amongst other things whether the application is procedurally correct, whether all necessary documentation is in place, and will fix a timetable for further consideration of your application.

All legal ties between the child and his or her birth family are brought to an end on the making of the order and transferred to the adoptive parents. Once the adoption order has been made it will be final and cannot be set aside even should the reason for the adoption turn out to be unfounded. There have been cases where allegations against the birth family have been found to be wrong after an adoption has taken place. Notwithstanding this the adoption could not be set aside.

Adoption by Gay Couples

Gay Rights has become a highly debated subject in recent years. The majority of people now agree that gay people and gay couples deserve the same rights as anyone else, but there are still people with strong opposing view. This is especially the case when it comes to adoption.

Gay people have been granted equal rights in many areas, with civil partnerships the biggest victory for gay right campaigners. Civil partnerships were introduced in the UK in 2005 and are a form of gay couples registering their partnership; very much like marriage under a different name. This was a way of legalising a marriage type institution for gay people, but getting around the argument that marriage should be for male-female couples only.

Same-sex adoption is an area that has been pursued heavily, and one that produces much debate. Some think that there should be equal right in all areas and therefore same-sex adoption should be legal, while others are completely against it. This includes many religious groups, especially the Catholic Church. The UK is amongst many nations where same-sex adoption is now legal, and more countries are bringing in similar laws all the time.

Below are some of the points that are being put forward on both sides of the gay-adoption argument.

ARGUMENT FOR

o There are so many children waiting for adoption so it only makes sense to utilise gay couples wishing to adopt.
o One of the main points made against same-sex adoption is that children need male and female role models. However the traditional family is not as common as it once was, and therefore many children do not grow up with both biological parents anyway.
o It is morally right that gay couples should be given the same adoption rights as straight couples.
o There is no reason why gay people cannot be good parents.

ARGUMENTS AGAINST

o It is best for children to grow up with a male and female role model. Even when parents separate, the children see both in the majority of cases.
o Children could be bullied if their parents are gay.
o Children could suffer psychologically by being bought up by a gay couple.

The question has to be asked, what is most important with adoption?

The most important thing is that children are loved and cared for, and therefore does it matter if they are bought up by one male, one female, one of each, or two of either? And is sexuality important in someone's ability to bring up children? If the answer to these questions is no, then this suggests that adoption should be allowed for gay couples.

Most of the argument against same-sex adoption can be countered.

o Many have claimed it is best children are bought up by both biological parents, but many do not stay together anyway.
o Emotional problems can stem from being bought up by gay parents - many studies that have been carried out looking into the subject though, suggest there are usually no psychological affects.
o Being bought up in a stable family is best for children - but civil partnerships can be just as stable as marriages.

THE LAW

Before the current laws came in one person was able to adopt a child. This meant that an adopted child could potentially live with this person and his or her partner, even if they were in a same-sex relationship. There were also situations where a gay woman would become pregnant through artificial insemination and then the child could live with her and her partner. This gave lesbian couples an advantage over all-male couples. In many ways then, it was possible for gay couples to bring up children.

New laws were implemented in 2006 so that same-sex couples could adopt a child together. There are strict adoption rules, but they are the same for gay and straight couples.

Many adoption agencies have ties with religious groups. Those with catholic connections refused to allow adoption by gay couples. This was ruled as being illegal in June 2009. Many of these organisations claimed they would rather close down than adopt to gay couples. However, most have abided by the rules.

Pet Adoption Websites

As the overpopulation of companion animals becomes an ever increasing problem for the nation, we are seeing a growth in the number of pet adoption websites.

It is not so much that websites are appearing without having a shelter behind them, it is more that the pet adoption websites are there to help publicize the shelter, their aims, beliefs and pets that they have available for adoption. The world wide web has become a great help for charitable organizations such as shelters for unwanted animals as it helps to broaden their scope for finding suitable homes. If a family is looking for a certain breed of dog or cat, they no longer have to visit the shelters to have a look around.

The pet adoption websites that are the window for established pet shelters are also able to give a large amount of information regarding the organization itself. They will be able to give details about how and when the shelter was established, the mission statement and their codes of practice. Also, they will obviously be able to show pictures of the pets that they are currently trying to re-home.

The world wide web, however, does create the possibility for some people to advertise and publicize organizations that are not all that they seem to be. There are some pet adoption websites available which do not seem to be a shop window for a registered shelter, but more an agency that charges to find you a suitable pet to adopt. They will then scour the various pet shelters until they find an animal that will suit you and put you in contact with the shelter for a fee. It is important that you check the details regarding the website to ensure that you are dealing with a bona fide shelter and not just a middle man.

Having said that, there are some pet adoption websites that are not animal shelters, but are a portal for a number of different shelters that are genuine and are merely a way of introducing you to all the establishments in the area. This is not a fee charging service and the website is purely a directory. They will direct you, via links, to shelters which they believe to be well run and have a good code of conduct. Many of these websites will also give information about what to do if you should find a homeless animal and information about many other aspects of pet care and re-homing.

If you are considering adopting a pet, be it a cat, dog, rabbit or a more unusual animal, make sure that you are using a genuine organization. Do some research and visit the shelter. Do not just stay at home and rely on the pet adoption website to bring the perfect pet to you or you may never get to know where you new pet has come from.

Symptoms of Cat Rabies - Know What to Do

A well-known virus which is present in the saliva of an affected animal is rabies. The disease is passed on to cats and other animals by a bite; therefore, the symptoms of cat rabies should be known by all cat owners.

There are many animals that are carriers of the virus but not actually affected. However, unfortunately, for a majority of cats that are bitten by an affected animal, the final result is death.

The disease is transmitted when an infected animal bites a non-infected animal. Rabies does not live for a great length of time outside of the host and remains in the carcass of an infected animal for less than 24 hours. Rabies is shed in incredible quantities in saliva. However, when an infected animal bites another or a human, it does not necessarily mean that the other animal or human will become infected. Humans, cats, and dogs are only mildly susceptible to rabies, unlike bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes that are more susceptible to the virus.

However, when most animals are bitten by another that is infected, the virus spreads through the nerves and to the brain. It is a relatively slow moving virus, with the average time of incubation being between 2 to 6 weeks in cats before is it is exposed to the brain. Once the virus reaches the brain, it moves to the salivary glands and this is where is can be spread through a bite.

Even though there are three stages to rabies, not all stages will always be evident in your cat. The three phases of symptoms of cat rabies include:

o Prodromal Phase

This is the stage whereby you cat may show the earliest, non-specific symptoms such as apprehension, anxiety, solitude, nervousness, and a fever. It may be a case that friendly cats become shy or irritable and may just snap, whereas aggressive cats may become affectionate. It is also possible for your cat to develop more fever spikes and erratic behavior which lasts for one or two days.

o Furious Phase

Cats are particularly prone to developing this phase. The symptoms of cat rabies in this phase are restless and irritability. They may also become hyper-responsive to auditory and visual stimuli. Cats will begin to roam and become vicious. This will then lead to them being disorientated and then have seizures and eventually die.

o Paralytic or Dumb Stage

This stage usually develops within 2 to 4 days. Cats may begin to salivate because they are unable to swallow. Deep breathing and a dropped jaw may be experienced as a result of the diaphragm and face muscles becoming increasingly paralyzed. The cat will become weaker and eventually go into respiratory failure and die.

You, as a cat owner, may not be aware that you car has been bitten by an infected animal. Therefore, it is extremely important that you always keep a close eye on the symptoms of cat rabies and take your feline friend to vet if you see any of the above symptoms.
